5 Free Crochet Patterns I’ve Tried
Finding a great crochet pattern is always exciting, but even better when it’s free! I love trying free patterns because they’re a low-commitment way to experiment with new techniques, stitches, or projects I might not have made otherwise. Some have become all-time favorites, while others were just fun to make. Here are 5 free patterns I’ve tried, and my thoughts on each one.
Why I chose it: At the time, I wanted a quick little Halloween project to work on, and this ghost doily was too cute to pass up. Plus, it was free, so I had nothing to lose by trying it! Since then, I’ve made two more for family who wanted one of their own.
What I liked: This has become an heirloom-level Halloween decoration for me. Every row is different, so it stays interesting to make, and I’m just obsessed with the final project. This is definitely one of my favorite free patterns out there.
2. Existential Crisis by destiny makes
Why I chose it: I first saw this little guy on Pinterest and he just spoke to my soul. I knew I needed to make it and have him on my wall. Plus, destiny makes has a variety of other free patterns on her website that are definitely worth checking out!
What I liked: The final result turned out just as I hoped, and he’s lived on my wall for quite some time now. It was a simple, well-written pattern, making it a great choice for anyone looking to try out tapestry crochet.
3. Granny Square Vest by Hayday Crochet
Why I chose it: When I first started crocheting, all I wanted was a granny square sweater. So when I came across this pattern, complete with a video tutorial, it felt like the perfect stepping stone towards that.
What I liked: This was a great beginner project for me. It worked up in a weekend, which made it a quick and satisfying project. It was also the first wearable I made and actually wore out of the house, which felt like a big milestone and really helped boost my confidence in my crochet skills.
4. Granny Christmas Baubles by Annie Design Crochet
Why I chose it: I originally made these for a winter craft fair where I was setting up a booth, but they ended up being such a great project that I kept quite a few for my own tree. Since then, they’ve also made really good gifts!
What I liked: They’re quick and easy to make—you just need some plastic ornaments from the dollar store or you can use old ornaments that need a little love. The granny stitch gives them a cute, vintage feel and they look stunning on the tree. I also found that with a small modification, they work great as car coasters!
5. Owie the Voodoo Doll by Hello Yellow Yarn
Why I chose it: I’ve had this voodoo doll pattern saved in my bookmarks for a while and I’d be lying if I said going through a breakup didn’t make it feel like the perfect time to finally make it! Plus, I just tend to enjoy amigurumi projects
What I liked: Like most amigurumi projects, this one was fun and satisfying to make, and it worked up in about an evening. You can customize it however you want—make it any color you like or do what I did and swap out the big safety eye for a button. He’s adorable and also functional.
